“Hügelkultur” is one of the City of Pasadena’s Water and Power most important initiatives for water conservation and landscaping.

“Hügelkultur” is a german word meaning hill culture or raised bed garden, a centuries-old European gardening technique that is self-fertilizing, good for the earth, and works for just about any kind of soil with a minimum irrigation. This no-dig technique utilizes decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass in a raised and mounded bed on which plants, trees, and shrubs can be planted. Anyone can use this sustainable gardening practice in their backyard, and protect Pasadena's underground water supply that is currently under threat.

Made in partnership with the City of Pasadena Water and Power, Pasadena Department of Transportation, and Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.
